Select Your Seed and Order Early

“The #1 reason to order seed early is to get the best price,” said Sam Johnson, Federated’s Albertville agronomy sales rep. Fall discounts are in place. The second reason is to improve your chances of getting the exact hybrid you want, “especially on the corn side,” he said.

In particular, the demand for Dekalb® and Brevant® seeds can be limited, so the sooner you place your orders the better, to lock in your seed choice.

For corn seed, the first consideration is how well the hybrid yields. Then, consider the soils on your farm and which seeds do best in those soils. Finally, consider the seed traits. “If you need corn rootworm protection, pick a seed with that trait, or at least consider if you can get by with above-ground protection,” said Johnson.

Tar spot is “definitely another aspect of seed to consider,” he said. Corn hybrids have various levels of tolerance to tar spot, so choose ones with a higher tolerance for best results.

On the soybean side of things, Johnson said, “We do our best job to pick the varieties that perform the best in [Federated’s] area. And those choices are what we put in our bulk bins.” These selections, mostly Enlist® E3™ beans, come with well-rounded diseases packages to cover the big three: white mold, soybean cyst nematodes, and sudden death syndrome. These “super high-yielding soybeans could get destroyed by these diseases,” he added.

“Prices will be out soon,” said Kevin Carlson, Federated’s agronomy sales manager. Early booking on seed “helps us secure the supply or the specific seed size” you want/need. “There is not an unlimited supply of seed; the seed suppliers make their allocations,” said Carlson, noting that “hot new products, especially in corn,” can sell out quickly.
